BioViva USA Inc. has received a U.S. patent covering therapeutic methods that combine human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) and Follistatin-344, the Seattle company announced on September 10, 2026.

U.S. Patent No. 12,653,907, titled Methods of Treating or Preventing Age-Related Disorders, was issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on June 16, 2026. BioViva is the assignee.

Background

The patent pairs two targets the company describes as complementary in aging biology.

hTERT is the catalytic part of telomerase, the enzyme involved in maintaining telomeres, the caps on the ends of chromosomes. Telomere length is tied to how many times a cell can divide.

Follistatin-344, encoded by the FST gene, is a protein involved in pathways linked to muscle and tissue function.

The issued claims cover giving the two together to treat or prevent age-related disorders, including approaches associated with telomere length, muscle mass, and blood-glucose levels. The patent also covers genetic delivery, including viral vectors such as adeno-associated virus (AAV).

What the Company Says

BioViva has built its intellectual property around mechanisms it associates with aging, rather than around each later-life disease on its own. Chief executive Elizabeth Parrish said the patent is a milestone in an effort to build a category of medicine focused on the biology of aging, and that protecting the hTERT and Follistatin-344 combination strengthens work the company has pursued for years.

Parrish also said aging is the greatest risk factor for many of the diseases that limit healthspan, and that BioViva’s goal is to address the biology that contributes to age-related decline rather than treat each consequence separately.

The company’s portfolio includes programs directed at telomere maintenance, tissue and muscle biology, metabolic regulation, and cognitive decline. It said it is still developing the platform with the longer-term aim of making genetic and regenerative therapies available for conditions associated with aging.

What’s Next

The announcement covers the issued patent. It does not describe a clinical trial, a development timeline, or a product ready for patients.
